I didn't put together a writing post for today. Instead, I decided to list those authors who I love and who might have influenced my writing. I figured this was easier than listing the books I love since that would be one very long list.
YA Contemporary
- Sarah Dessen (Favorites include: Lock and Key, Along for the Ride, The Truth about Forever, Just Listen)
- Sarah Ockler (Her debut novel is Twenty Boy Summer. I cried. A lot.)
- Lurlene McDaniel (Hit and Run, Breathless, Prey, Letting Go of Lisa. I went through a gazillion boxes of Kleenexes with Lurlene’s books).
- Jay Asher (Yep, another Kleenex box worthy author.)
- Simone Elkeres (Perfect Chemistry. Definitely steamy. The book inspired me to add some Spanish to Lost in a Heartbeat to make the characterization stronger.)
- Laurie Halse Anderson (Speak and Wintergirls)
- Bethany Griffin (Handcuffs)
YA Paranormal/Urban Fantasy
- Lisa McMann (I can't get enough of her Wake series.)
- Alyson Noël (Actually, Saving Zoë had an influence on my current novel, Lost in a Heartbeat).
- Cassandra Clare (The Mortal Instrument Series. If only I could write imagery like she does.)
- Richelle Mead (Dimitri. Need I say more?)
- Daniel Waters (Generation Dead and Kiss of Life. Brilliant themes. They’re the only zombie books I like.)
- Stephenie Meyers (I’ll admit I’ve switched to Team Jacob after seeing New Moon in the theatre.)
- Libra Bray (I loved the Gemma Doyle series—The Great and Terrible Beauty, etc.)
This is just a sample of my favorite authors, and I’m discovering new ones all the time. Who are some of your fav authors?
Now I’m off now to deal with my Wii injury (strained shoulder muscles). Turns out playing tennis on the system is not the same as playing it in real life. Lovely.
Hope you all have a safe and happy New Year's Eve. And best wishes for the New Year.

I must get my hands on Twenty Boy Summer, stat. Thanks for the list!
LOL. That's how I felt when Jennifer Hunt (senior editor of Little Brown) showed us the book during one session at the LA SCBWI conference this year. It's not like she told us what the book was about. But with that title, I had to check it out. I rushed over to Borders (I think), which was located across the street from the hotel and bought the book. An impulse I didn't regret. :D
My fave right now is Suzanne Collins. And I like Carrie Ryan a lot, too.
You gave me some great ideas to put on my "to read" list.
Happy New Year Stina! This is a fabulous list! We have very similar tastes in books. I'm going to have to check out some of the one you've listed that I haven't read yet.
The Hunter Games is on my list of must reads for 2010. Okay, more like for this month. I've heard it's a depressing read if you're a writer because Susanne is brilliant.
Loved a lot of the books you named! I have to check out the ones I haven't read, since we seem to have similar taste.
Also, I saw a couple people on here recommending Suzanne Collins.
I want to second that!
She's amazing and the Hunger Games/Catching Fire books are such fast reads. Her pacing is incredible and the tension never lets up. Definitely one of my favorite writers!
Also, although I haven't read much Neal Shusterman, "Unwind" was an awesome book. The characters are really engaging and the concept is excellent.
I've stayed away from 13 Reasons because I generally don't like depressing books. Would you recommend it to someone that loves a happy ending?
I had Hunger Games on hold at the library but somehow managed to cancel it. So now I'm 86 on the list. I think I'll just go buy instead.
As for 13 Reasons Why. Yes, it is a sad story, especially near the end. But the good news is you already know Hannah dies from page two. So that's not a suprise. But the ending is, in a way, happy. At least I found it uplifting. It gives you hope.
