The Twelve Days of Christmas for Writers: Day Nine

                                                                           source

In order to be a fiction writer, you need to not only study books on the craft of writing, you need to read stories (yay!). A LOT of stories (double yay!). Stories both inside and outside your genre.

Now, I don’t know about your loved ones, but my husband is totally clueless about what YA novels I want to read (plus many don’t come out until 2012). But fortunately some genius invented GIFT CARDS.

On the ninth day of Christmas my true love gave to me . . .

Gift cards, so I can go on a novel-buying spree (yippee!),
AquaNotes, so I can brainstorm in the shower,

Wow, I can’t believe there are only three more days left of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas for Writers’.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Loving your catch-up links as always, Stina! And gift cards are the best. I love getting them! I guess I get why people say they're impersonal gifts to give, but I think they're great because you can get what you really really want or need.

Yay for giftcards. Love 'em. Great list again.

I want to know how to upload an audiobite into a blog post. Ugh.

Giftcards, the gift that keeps on giving :)

Thanks for the links, Happy Friday to you ...

I can embed tweets on my blog, yippee I'm amazing..haha

Yeah giftcards work great, then the recipient can get the books they want. I also watch tons of tv too, so that helps with story ideas and such.

Thanks for the article links and the great ideas for gifts I can ask Santa to give me. A gift card for novels and all the things a writer loves.

LOL...I so, so hear you on the joy of GIFT CARDS, it makes me practically giddy. Gets me thinking it would be fun for some of us to try and get together to go book shopping.

Merry Christmas!

Thanks for the link on Julie's characterizations post. I left a comment over there, but I think it speaks greatly to why we should encourage reading--it makes us better able to comprehend complex people and situations.

as always, great links. I've read several of these (Julie, Jodie, LGG), and they're all excellent. And oh yes. Getting gift cards for books is like HEAVEN to me... :D <3

All gift cards can be sent c/o Don Vito Corleone over at Middle Grade Mafioso. We'll make sure they get to you. (After we sell you that bridge to Brooklyn, that is.)

We particularly like gift cards to our local indie bookstores, too.

I LOVE gift cards! That's all I want for Christmas, because frankly, I read so fast and so much that no one ever knows which books I want and haven't bought yet - LOL.

Awww, thanks for the mentions!!! You're so sweet. And gift cards? Perfect gift for writers. :D

Oh, boy, do I need a True Love like that--what a sigh-worthy list of gifts. :D

Can I make a terrible confession? I've only read one book on craft. Actually, half a book. I didn't even finish it. Horrible, I know. They give me a headache. I guess I'd rather just write and learn the ropes the hard, slow way. LOL!

Gift cards ARE the way to go. Good hubby! Because part of the fun is going to the bookstore, right? :)

Oh, I love gift cards for bookstores! There's nothing better than spending an afternoon browsing, buying a good book and then bringing it home to curl up with it.

Only three days?! Yikes, time is flying. I love this one. We can never read enough as writers. I'm off to check out the great links. Thanks for keeping track of them all for us.

Thanks for the links!! I've ALWAYS wanted to learn how to do that! You're awesome!
And I'm with you on that one! (re: I love that to be a writer you need to read a lot!)

Thanks for your good vibes, too! (I'm still happy about my news).

I love your 12 days of Christmas song! Only another writer would get what you want for Christmas. I told my hubby I wanted an IOU a writing workshop for Christmas. He looked very puzzled.

Have a wonderful Christmas!

Michelle Dennis Evans said...

He he - love the song.
Thanks for the great links - I'm off to check out the unlikeable characters first.

Nobody will give me gift tokens as they're 'not special enough'. Really, they are :-)

I love gift cards! Some people think they're impersonal but I love being able to pick out something (like books!) myself.
