Lending Out Your Ebooks

My CP and I discovered a cool feature over Christmas. You can lend your Kindle books to friends and family. So I thought I’d share some tips we discovered, some the hard way (see #4).

1. Not all Kindle books can be loaned out. To find out if the one you want to loan can be loaded out, look on its Amazon page and scroll down the Product Description. Next to ‘Lending,’ it needs to say ‘Enabled’.

2. You can only loan out the book ONCE. So save that special book for that special person. Of course, if you’re sending a book on how to be a better person to someone you consider to be a major jerk, loan away.

3. How many times have you lent a book to someone and never saw it again? *raises hand* Not a problem with the Kindle lending system. The person who borrows the book from you only gets it for FOURTEEN DAYS, before it vanishes from their Kindle or Kindle app. How cool is that?

4. DO NOT lend a book you are still reading, especially if it’s at a good part (like a very steamy make out scene). Like with a real book, when you loan it out, it’s no longer in your possession. You can’t open it on your Kindle until the loan period is over or the borrower sends it back to you. Wait until you’ve read the book BEFORE you loan it to your friend.

5. If you want to loan the book to a friend, check with them first to make sure they have time to read it now. Nothing is worse than getting to the climax and having the book vanished because your fourteen days is up.

Has anyone else tried the lending system through Kindle? Do you lend your books to friends and family (ebooks or hardcopies)?

I forgot to mention in my final Cool Links Post last week that The Adventures in YA & Children’s Publishing blog has brought back the popular weekly links post. It is now on Saturdays. They always have great links.

And because I can’t totally abandoned the great links I find, I will be tweeting them on Twitter during the week. You can find them at @StinaLL.

That's great that you can at least loan the book once. One of my peeves about e-books though is that many of the mainstream ones are almost as expensive as a print book that can be loaned out multiple times.

My aunt gave me a Nook which I am enjoying but I'm thinking of asking for a Kindle for my birthday. Do you recommend that?

Nice list of tips. Hmm I wonder who that CP was that lent you that book in the middle of a steamy scene? *cough cough*

Wow I had no idea that you could do this through Kindle!

I saw it there but never actually looked at it, nice to know.

I'll have to pass this on to my wife. She and my daughter own Kindles, and share many of the same reading interests. Thanks! :)

We have two tablets and a Kindle attached to the same Amazon account. That is great, since when Dina or I buy a book...it shows up on all three devices.

Ya think...when she loans out her copy, my copy gets locked out for two weeks too? I'll bet. At least we have the multiple copies to begin with :O)

I never loan out a book until I'm finished reading it. I usually give them to Friends of the Library when I'm done.

I haven't done it, but I love the lending potential. I think a more reasonable number of times to lend it would be 2 or 3, but I can live with one. I mean heck, people in my household can just use my Kindle.

Thanks for the list of things to think about when we do it!

I knew this but have yet to find a book with the lending enabled. It's a great idea though!

I love the auto-return feature, but I'm not so sure I like the only lending once issue. I'm the lending library at work. What if someone had stuff come up and wasn't able to finish it? What if everyone in the office wants to borrow it. One reason I still like to have paper books, too, sometimes.

I was just talking about this with my niece and sister over Christmas, thanks for the details on how to do it.

I didn't know you could lend on Kindle! Thanks for letting me know :)

Cool tip! I will pass it on to my Kindle-bearing friends!

I haven't leant any books out, but this is so good to know!

I've done some Kindle lending and am always annoyed when this feature is turned off. It makes the book seem less "real" in that if I purchased a paperback book I can loan it to anyone I choose.

I don't have too many books on my Kindle right now, but I'd be willing to lend them if anyone were interested. I know I've lent hardcover/paperback books a few times, but can't remember the last time I did it.

Such great tips, Stina! Thank you for sharing. Aha so that is how you can tell if they are lending friendly. EXCELLENT post!

I wanted to lend you Slammed, but it's not enabled :(. I've never tried this before.

I knew you could lend some of them but hadn't looked up the how and when of it. Thanks for the details, I know they'll come in handy.

That's pretty cool. I'm glad you mentioned the whole wait until your done to lend bit though...

Major jerk, loan away - LOL!!! That's why I like you, Stina.

I don't have a Kindle, but good to know about their lending features.

I haven't loaned a Kindle book yet. I'm sure if my sister ever breaks down and buys one, we'll be lending back and forth. I think it's a cool feature.

I don't have a kindle or ereader for that matter. I do have a birthday coming up and I'm hoping to score one then...I'll keep this function in mind but shoot, 14 days is not long...

Sadly no kindle, but I prefer 'real' books anyway plus I can give them to my local library when I 'm done :)

I have a Nook. :( This makes me wish even more that I had bought a Kindle instead!

I've used my Kindle (which is new from Christmas) to check out books from the library through Amazon. It's absolutely GREAT!

And I'd love to be able to reciprocate and lend to others. I only have a couple of books so far.

I had wondered about being able to share books on Kindle but didn't know it was possible. Thanks! Yeah, I have lost a few hard copy books, as well as DVDs and CDs, through lending. So I appreciate that I get it back, but it often takes me more than 2 weeks to read a book, for various reasons!

Vicki Rocho said...

Next you'll need to tell me the physical clicks to lend. I've got a kindle (did you ever think you'd hear those words from me?), but I haven't really poked around in it enough...

Rachel Schieffelbein said...

Thanks for the link! I just went and checked it out. :) Following them and you now. :)

Slamdunk said...

I wasn't sure how this works so thanks for the insight Stina. Good to remember not to loan one that you are not finished with--nothing like being 1/2 done with a work and poof.

Barbara Watson said...

That's a neat feature!

This is a wonderful feature. I'm going to check this out now!

Thanks Stina!

I think the lending is fantastic. I know people who have a Kindle. Maybe I should ask around and see if anyone's interested in exchanging books. The only thing that worries me is the 14 days policy. I like to read more than one book at a time and some books take longer to read than others.

Oh wow I never knew! Love it. :-D

I hear ya! This is a wonderful feature, especially considering people always used to borrow my books and I'd never see them again. Now, I just tell people I only have copies on my kindle. =)

Thanks for telling me about this. Its great. Some of the Ebooks are indeed very expensive, so this is a blessing.
