Social Media Just for Writers

It doesn’t matter if your books are traditionally published or self-published (or both), you’re the main force responsible for marketing them. One of the best forms of marketing available is social media. But with so many different ones available, how do we know which will benefit us the most when promoting our books, and how do use them for maximum benefit?

In her book Social Media Just for Writers, Frances Caballo focuses on several popular social media sites*. She explains how each one works and the ins and outs of them, provides step-by-step instructions for setting them up (including screen shots so you know what she’s talking about), and shares tips for promoting your books through the individual sites. Her advice is sound and I liked that she’s against spamming. She warns you when certain activities are considered spamming. Some of this is subjective. There are a few things that she suggested that I prefer authors don’t do. For example, I’m tired of the countless number of Facebook or Goodreads event invites that land in my inbox. Most are deleted unread.

One thing I appreciated with this book is the easy to follow format. This is perfect if you are not technically inclined. Also, Frances includes lists of apps for each of the social media sites and explains the pros and cons of them. Until Social Media Just for Writers, I didn’t realize there were so many of them. For those of you who blog, there is a list of resources you can use for locating royalty free photos. This is very important if you don’t want to end up being sued by the owner of copyrighted material.

In addition to the chapters on social media, there is a chapter on offline promotion with some helpful suggestions. A glossary has also been included to make your life easier when figuring out the different terms associated with the different social media sites.

Overall, I loved this book and am thankful I had the opportunity to review it. I recommend it to everyone who is a writer, no matter where they are in the publication process. The sooner you get started being seen the better.

Have you read any social media how-to books created for writers? What forms of social networking do you enjoying using?

I’d like to thank Frances Caballo for sending me a copy of Social Media Just for Writers: The Best Online Marketing Tips for Selling Your Books for an unbiased review.

*The following are covered in the book: Facebook, Facebook author pages, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Picasso and Pinterest, and blogs. Unfortunately she doesn’t cover Tumblr, which is now popular with teens.

GIVEAWAY: If you are interested in winning a copy of the book and live in the USA, please let me know in the comments. And make sure you include your email address if it isn’t attached to your blog account.

This sounds like a great book Stina. I'll probably buy it. I just read Chuck Sambuchino's book, CREATE YOUR WRITER PLATFORM, for an interview in February. It's so got me thinking about writing platform, which is so important in using social media to promote yourself and your books. I'm hoping this book will help me with this too as I'm really thinking about how I can increase my platform.

One thing I'm definitely going to do is join Twitter soon and see what I can do with that.

This sounds really useful. I'm sure there are many things I'm ignorant of (eg, I've never heard of Picasso?) And having a lot of helpful advice in one place is definitely a great idea!

I wonder if she used the social media to market her book on using social media to market books. My brain hurts.

Yeah. For some of the events on FB I'm okay, but some just overkill. I'll have to check this out since I'm "on the path" now. Scary.

I have always wondered how writers get their name out there via social media. This was an interesting post. Twitter seems to be a GREAT way to get noticed.

Lots of things out there to use for sure, sure there are some even I don't know about.

Yeah, I was blown away by how much I didn't know and different ways networks like facebook could be used behind the scenes. Good stuff!

Sounds like a must-read! Especially with so many self-pubbing nowadays.

I would love to win a copy of the book-- if it could be sent to my parents in Los Angeles! If I won, they could send it to me here in France!

Social media is a time suck for all of us, but has to be done. That being said, I'd love to read this book to see if she has any insights in how to better use time management.

I love Twitter but I just don't have the time anymore. I could stay on the feed all day just reading through things. Or maybe that's just me and not setting a clear time limit.

It looks like a useful read Stina; thanks for the review. I see benefits in Twitter and blogging (for authors certainly FaceBook and posting book trailers to youtube as well), but FB drives me nuts.

Sounds great for the clueless person like myself. Hmm, no goodreads though. By all means enter me in the contest.

Sounds great! But I need to get writing more than onlining :( It has become quite a problem!

Oh that sounds useful. I'm not so good with the social media stuff-so add my name to the hat.

I would love to win a copy of this! Her views sound fascinating; I'd love to explore and add to my social media knowledge. Elements I want to learn better: make the most of social media in the least amount of time & get a firm grasp of its etiquette i.e. all those requests. Drives me crazy, too.

Thanks so much for the review Stina...

I would DEFINITELY be thrilled to win a copy of tis book.

mculi at aol dot com. Just to make it easier... lol.

But this is a book WE all should have. I do a bit here ant there, but I would really like to know more. I mostly concentrate on blogging because I find it more rewarding, but I do need to know how to WORK Facebook and Twitter better. And I don't have a clue about Pinterest.

Oh, and sorry for the CHILLY reminder in my post this morning... Stay warm.

This sounds like an amazing book! I wouldn't even know where to start so this would be a great book to get my hands on!

I'd love to win this. Like Anne, I need some tips to get the most return for time invested. Facebook especially seems tough to master, when its algorithms of who sees what is so incomprehensible.

Count me in on the contest. I'm glad you reviewed this book. It's one I've been considering for awhile now. A little more savvy in this area would be helpful. Thanks for the insightful review.

That's such a great idea. With all of the social media available at our fingertips these days, having a guide is almost mandatory!

The book sounds interesting. I feel like 'm mostly treading water online, constantly about to go under trying to keep up with all the great blog posts writers put up. It's probably way past time I started thinking about it more logically.

My social media skills need a lot of work, so count me in for the giveaway! Sounds like this one is pretty helpful.

Thanks for the review, Stina. So glad you liked my book. You have a wonderful community of writers. I'm impressed with this blog!

@Anne: Social media needn't be a time suck. I included more applications 40 applications on Twitter alone. Some of these apps can save you a lot of time.

As a writer myself, I am familiar with the struggle between finding time to write and marketing my book using social media. I can tell you this: I released my book in October and it is selling all over the US and the UK. Without social media, this wouldn't have been possible.

Allocate 15 minutes in the morning 15 in the evening to your social media marketing. You can accomplish a lot in that bit of time.

Wonderful review, Stina. Sounds like a great book. I'm surprised she didn't include Goodreads. Mostly I rely on blogs, Facebook, and Twitter.

facebook is good, blogging is okay, but i prob need help on getting the most out of them w/o alienating people! reviews and blurbs are my fave booksellers. they are what influence me most, but i dont like having an author spout about their great reviews or comments every day... i dont want to be that aay either. i'd love a copy! can use every bit of advice out there!

Thank you for this review. Promoting online can be tricky and time consuming. And there is always that nagging question about whether online promotion helps and if so, how much.

I was interviewed by Frances about my use of social media to spread the word about my novel, A Time to Cast Away Stones. I've been looking for a blog to ask for the free copy! I know I MUST read this book - and also told my (indie) publisher, Tory Hartmann, Sand Hill Review Press, that I'd "review" it for her. I suggested that she gift it to her new authors! It would be at least as useful as her gift of a canvas bag with the book cover photo (which I DID appreciate). Please consider me for the giveaway!

I liked 'We Are Not Alone: The Writer's Guide to Social Media' by Kristen Lamb, and similarly there were some things I didn't agree with (she suggests MySpace is still a good place to promote), but most of this book was gold. Especially for any authors new to social media.

I'm going to give this book a try (although I won't go into the comp - I'm in Australia).

Cheers.

You are the QUEEN of awesome knowledge. Love it, Stina. I swear I just need to come to you if I ever have a problem, LOL :D

Sounds excellent. I really like the idea of it being tailored to just writers. The social media scene can be so overwhelming, especially when you don't have much time to put into it but want to maximize its full potential. I'll keep this book in mind the next time I order from Amazon. Thanks Stina. (:

Agents are lucky in that our partners in publishing (the authors) tend to seek us out, but even so social media outreach is important to us, and I've found myself debating which platform is most relevant.

For an author that decision must be even more important! It's great that something like this book is out there to help people along.
